Use a heavy-bottomed sauce pan with a large surface area, and preheat it over medium-low heat, making sure the entire surface area of the bottom is evenly heated. Also use a light colored pan in order to better see the process.

Sprinkle part of 1 cup of sugar into a heavy sauce pan set over medium-low heat, and watch carefully until it begins melting. Swirl and/or shake the pan gently every 20 seconds or so, and sprinkle more of the sugar on top of the melted parts until the entire cup of sugar is in the pan.
